The Sculptural Vessel form was originally
an idea that Mark began experimenting with as early as 1969 during his courses in
sculpture at New England College. Inspired primarily by the work of Jean Arp,
Henry Moore, and Constantine Brancusi, Mark merged the formal ideologies and technical
direct carving methods of the modern sculptors with the traditions and approaches of Asian
folk potters and their American counterparts of the studio ceramics movement. Mel
and Mark influenced each other greatly during the 70's and Melvin quickly picked up on
Mark's work with sculptural vessels and began creating his own styles and forms which have
become highly prized by collectors.

The Sculptural
Vessel Has Been a favorite form that Melvin
has "played with" since the late seventies, inspired particularly by the very
beautiful and natural sculptural forms of manzanita wood. Often his sculptural
vessels of this period took on anthropomorphic and animal shapes. This sculptural
convention is found in Hopi and Pre-Columbian forms. |
