"Bowl in Flight I
is an homage to the great modernist sculptor Brancusi, who was a major influence in my pursuit of sculpture.  In my early quest to elevate the simple bowl form to the level of art acceptability, I began making sculpture within the confines of the vessel.  The rough turned forms, stacked, and made of contrasting woods, echo Totems I made as a child in a YMCA father and son group called
Indian Guides
.  Each father and son were given a roughed-out piece of mahogany and carved their animal equivalent.  When each father/son pair arrived at the camp fire meeting, the individual totems were stacked to signify their presence.  As a youngster, this was powerful imagery, which has stayed with me my whole life.  Seen conversely, the sculpture also evokes an arrow coming down, piercing its target, one of the aspects of Zen, which I was also interested in at one point in my life.  Perhaps the most influential imagery for me, however, is the idea of the struggle of humankind for ascendancy, for acceptance, for reaching for the higher power from which we all have sprung.  Just as the simple bowl could become a powerful metaphor, communicating through symbols and imagery, the piece is perhaps a self-portrait, expressing how, in my life, I have either been reaching or at rest.  The push/pull of this piece is about the tension in life, but mostly, the hope of the promise of rebirth."
