In Hey, You!
Get Off of My Cloud! I (backhandedly) acknowledge the
accomplishments of my former student (and former assistant) Stoney Lamar,
who often uses song titles as titles for his pieces.
The title is also a tongue-in-cheek comment on the pitfalls of being a
pioneer. More than twenty-five years have passed since many of
my innovations in the field of wood sculpture, and I am chagrined at times
at being told that my work looks like that of some young turner who
doesn't know where the concepts he/she cheerfully appropriates have come
from. This piece is made using the sophisticated chainsaw/lathe robotics
turning/sculpting techniques that I pioneered. Rather than eliminating
the usual cone, which in other pieces is either included or completely
removed, I have revised the cone so that the tip now aims directly at the
viewer as if "making a point."
This
piece is a statement of opposites: serious and jesting, combining ancient
themes with modern approaches, and traditional techniques with the highest
level of current technology. Perhaps there's an element of
architecture there as well.
